The Conservation Corps will hold its Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 29, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The theme of this year’s celebration is Reuse! The club will be highlighting ways to reuse various items rather than dispose of them. If you want to showcase your own projects that repurpose items, either to sell or simply to inspire others, please contact Betsy Kiker at ekiker@verizon.net.

First up on the agenda, at 9:00 a.m., will be a plant exchange, garden discussion, and morning munchies. Then, starting at 10:00 a.m., club members will demonstrate to the kids how to make plarn (yarn made from plastic bags) and set them to the task of making balls of the stuff that can be used to create all kinds of useful projects. Obviously, it is best to use sturdy, reusable bags for shopping, but if you have any clean plastic bags that you have been unable to avoid, including dry cleaner bags, please drop them off to Betsy’s house, 1706 Fantasia Circle, to be used in the activity. If it is windy, just pop them in the milk cooler on her porch. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the club will unveil its winners of the 2016 “nature in the neighborhood” photography contest. After that, there will be a parent and child scavenger hunt that will serve to kick off next year’s photography contest by asking each team to capture items on a digital camera or smartphone.
